Public Holidays - Statutory

It is my understanding that there is only 1 statutory public holiday in the UK, and that is May day. Can anyone confirm if I am correct, and the reason why this date.

In that case your understanding is incorrect. And dates vary - there are differences across the UK.

"Statutory holidays" are those public holidays established by statute.

It may be easier if you explained why you are asking, particularly on an employment forum?

For virtually all employment law purposes public / bank holidays are irrelevant.

Are you trying to establish whether their are days across the year in which everyone gets the day off?

I used to work in a call centre - I never had any bank holiday off or Easter Sunday. Only day off for everyone was Christmas except for the tech support staff as this was open 24hrs 7 days a week so they had to be someone people working on Christmas day.

Also think about hospitals, police etc they have to work these days too.

Sorry if I have answered the incorrectly but it seemed like this is what you are asking.

Indeed. There is no right to have bank / public / statutory holidays off work. Your entitlement is to 5.6 weeks (28 days) paid holiday per year to be taken entirely at your employer's discretion.

I think generally most employers state that your entitlement to 5.6 wks holiday a year includes the 8 public/bank holidays
If you have to work on one or more of them (due to rota, shift patterns etc) you can take a further day off in lieu of the bank holiday day that you had to work, so that you still have the full 5.6 weeks over the holiday year

Obviously ward staff and a and e will have to work these but many outpatient departments have these days off.

Also shop staff have to work these days as well. It's all down to the employer. I get all of these days off on top of my 27 days I get a year.
