Well yes I am being vague because the real reason is yes to convert a van into electric. The last post I did not one person helped with my question all people said how the idea to go electric is nonsense.
Yes I work in Germany the conversion is taking place in the uk hence the uk loan. Thank you pixie for your help but I can't find a loan or grant for this
Leaving a months gap between the last thread and this 1 wont mean the replies will be any different.
As suggested in 1 of the past threads why not just buy an electric 1 camper van ?0 -
@dcfcs this is exactly why I kept my motives vague. Thank you for all who helped with the actual loan issue. I think I will try to borrow 20k from Sainsbury's does anybody know if someone who works in Germany can do that?0

If you're resident in the UK and your pay ends up in a UK bank I doubt there would be an issue.
But have you done your research on costs properly? Were you aware of this, for example?

The days of low-cost, subsidised public charging points in the UK are gone.
The point about weight and its affect on range is also very relevant. My tiny T5 based camper weighs over 2.5 tonnes with all my kit on board. Here in the UK, most of the milk delivery companies abandoned battery powered delivery vans because they did not make economic sense - all of the companies around here use diesel Transits instead. Why should the economics be any better for a camper van?0 -

2. Do you have no other debt?
3. Do you have assets like a house to use as security?

I don't think the fact that this project makes absolutely no sense from either a practical or financial viewpoint is of any interest to the OP. It is not something he is willing to let go of. The fact that he is working in Germany is likely to rule out obtaining any kind of finance in the UK anyway. This is probably the only factor that will save the OP from his own decisions.0 -
I drive an electric car (30kW Leaf), so I have some experience with EVs and can understand your logic.
You say you've been promised a 200 mile range, but this will vary massively on many factors. If I drive so slowly and coast as much as possible I can hit the quoted 150 miles in summer in my leaf but I will have a queue of drivers behind me beeping.
If I drive in a... spirited fashion, I can get it as low as about 80 miles.
Winter (cold battery) and to a much lesser extent ac/heating reduce range further.
More realistically, without much effort, I get between 100-120 miles.
Rapid charging (CHAdeMO, 50kW) can charge quite quickly, but the spacing of chargers can be annoying. I want a charger every 100 miles or so, but often I'm charging after 25 miles so I can make it to the next one which is 110 away. When it's 30 mins or so to charge, this gets annoying. Range is also MUCH shorter at motorway speeds - it's not a motorway mile muncher.
The car is amazing, and it suits me well as I can charge at home every night for not much money at all. I rarely do 120 miles in a day, and when I do it's doing journeys to places like Ikea that have a rapid charger I can use for free while in the shop. I swap cars with my other half if I need to do say a 250 mile journey, she has a 208 diesel.
That said, I really really would not recommend it for a camper van you want to do cross european long distance trips in. It's just not suitable. You will find broken chargers leaving you stranded, etc etc.
Your conversion will be worthless to sell, hard to insure, and if you have an accident in the time you own it you will be left with a massive loan to pay and not enough payout from insurance to cover it.
If they are saying 200 mile range on a camper van, they must be talking 60-70kWh battery? That will take up a lot of space. Your real world range at 60-70mph is probably more likely to be 120 miles, and the other big issue for you is that rapid charging heats up the battery very quickly.
If you want to do say, 600 miles in a day because you're on the way home to the UK, you will find that by your final charge, the battery has heated up LOADS and your charge rate is really low, certainly not "rapid" anymore.0 -

No problems, I don't mean to sound too negative about it - EVs are the way forward and a pleasure to drive. I just feel your use case is about the least suited to an EV possible!
Maybe in 5-10 years, as Tesla bring more Gigafactories online so Li Ion cells drop in cost and charging infrastructure improves.0
