Problems filing quarterly VAT return

I'm trying to file a VAT return via Kashflow (software I've used successfully for some years). I keep getting the message that the 'supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service'.
This has never happened before and I've not changed any of the settings. The service is running normally (I've checked HMRC's website). I've not yet registered for 2 step verification, in case that's relevant.
Anyone else having this problem, please - and if so, any hints on how to sort it out? Many thanks for any help you can offer.
