Filing online: can't login. What am I doing wrong?

in Cutting tax
OK, so I'm a newbie at filing my self-assessment return online, but I seem to be going round in circles.
I have got a Government Gateway Account, have received an Activation Code for Self Assessment, and have activated the PIN.
After activation I clicked the link for SA (it being the only service for which I am registered), and I get the HM Revenue and Customs page. Top two items are HMRC Services: sign in or register, and Self Assessment.
Click on Self Assessment, and first item on list is Register for and file your self-assessment tax return. Click on this and now I'm in a loop.
I have already registered with HMRC as self-employed, and I already have a Government gateway account. Click on Sign in using Government Gateway, using the used ID and Password I already have, and which I used successfully a few minutes ago. Now I'm told Invalid user ID or Password.
Could somebody get me out of this loop, please?
