Tax Code 350L

Any advice would be great as haven't had much luck with the Tax Office. I received my wages last week and had a new Tax Code 350L so rang the Tax Office and after about 25 minutes got through to someone and was told the reason for this was because in 2014 I had my hours cut at one job and started at another one gave the payroll all the details.......and didn't think anymore until last Monday when I was informed that I had underpaid tax by £94 but had encurred £1600.00 in penalties..!!!!! because l hadn't filled in a self assessment form online.....This totally confused me as l thought you only done these if you are self employed....They had sent me letters they say which l never received...I was then asked by the lady yet again what my name was and l told her to which she said that's not the name we have....I asked her what name they had and it turns out that they still had changed me back to my married name (I had changed my name by deed poll 3 years back and informed them and had had letters sent by everyone in my new name)....I am still waiting on a activation code to which l will then fill in the self assessment....my main question is what is the likely hood of getting these penalties quashed once they have looked at my self assessment? and will the amount they deduct from my wages increase each week? I have tried to ask questions but I always seem to get the most unhelpful person.

Do you know why you didn't receive the letters ?
Do they have your currnt address ?

If you've moved recently then you'll have more chance to challenge it if you can say that you informed them of a change of address.
