My Grandad is in debt help me help him

Hello All :)

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction.

My nan has not long passed away and my grandad now on his own has debts of.

Loan £11,000
Barclay Card £1300

He no longer has any Credit cards, he lives in a council house with his rent paid and claims a goverment pension.

He Pays £40 per month of his loan....... needless to say this will never be paid off.

I have phoned barclay card and they dont want to know and dont car that he only pays £20 per months £17 intrest and £3 off his over all debt.

He will never be able to get another credit card becuase of his age (late 70's) and his current debts.

I was very annoyed at barclay card, and wondered if he could just declair him self bankrupt ?

This way all his debts would be wiped ?

How much would it cost if i paid for him to go bankrupt?

Thanks

-Tom

That is so sad :-[ :'(

Call the National Debtline - knowledgeable, helpful, friendly people. It's a charity that gives practical help to people like your Grandad. You can call on his behalf.

    It's a free call

I agree with the advice above. Please DON'T go to the companies that advertise on t.v.
My very best wishes and hope you sort it out.
There is a pensioners tax credit that was brought out last year, does your grandad claim this.
Don't really know any details but sure if you posted on benefits board Fran would help you out.

What was the loan for - is there a car or something of value, which could possibly be sold, to raise some cash??

& I'm sure Barclaycard would be more helpfull, if you wrote to them asking to suspend the cards & freeze the account, with no further interest/penalties.

The best thing is certainly to write to loan company & Barclaycard, asking for their help & advise.

Then you'll have something to work from.

Whilst agree that this is the right route for many of us, getting a sympathetic response is a bit hit & miss. It depends who gets the letter to deal with - lenders can and do adopt some "heavy" tactics and could pass the matter on to debt collectors.

National Debtline, Payplan or the CCCS will actually conduct these negotiations on your behalf.

Given the circumstances here, I wouldn't want my Gramps to have to deal with this, especially following a bereavement. And he's in his 70s so probably not used to today's hard-nosed financial world.

I would very strongly recommend a call to the National Debtline. They will be very sympathetic and very motivated to take up his case.

Not wishing to be confrontational with you Vansboy, but he can do without further grief. Hope you agree

    YEP!

Wasn't wanting to go in 'hard' at the finance co, more let them know what the situation is!

Sometimes an overworked person on the recieving end of dozens of excuses daily, from people not wanting to REALLY sort the problem, may miss the date of birth, or whatever info comes up on their screen.

May even be 'trained' to be unemotional, to telephone callers.

Certainly a more organised, not in it for the money, assistance is needed, here!

    Keep us posted!

Can you give us an update? I've worried about your Grandad every day since you first posted and would dearly like to hear some "good news".

    Whatever's happening, don't give up!

Please let us know how things are going.
