Well if you go and don't come back for 6 years you will be debt free without paying anything, of course i'm not recommending that sort of thing but still

I think it basically means they can only chase you for 6 years and if they can't get you its written off,

dj is referring to the debts being statute barred if you stop paying and they don't contact you for 6 years. This is obviously assuming they can't contact you while you are over there. It also excludes mortgages, for which the term is 12 years not 6. I certainly would not recommend doing this, as, though the debt would be unenforceable, it will stick around on your record for a long time and other companies (even ones in America) would be less inclined to give you credit.

Yes, they do. On my green card application (back in 1995) I had to declare that I was debt free in my home country. I suppose you could always lie, but I wouldn't recommend it; the INS are not known for their sense of humour.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • i was hoping you wouldn't say that its really difficult to know what to do for the best i dont want to mess up the future completely however cannot carry on like this .. a DMP with payplan seems like a good idea but with the prospect of a job abroad for my husband i dont want to jeopardise it:eek:
