Bad Credit Mortgages with Savings

I just want some advice as I am struggling.
I've got a bad credit score - included in this is a default which I have repaid (4 years ago) and its leaving me with a bad footprint for credit, no CCJ's or anything major though.
I have roughly £30k in savings which I want to invest in buying my first home with my partner.
She has perfect credit, I have bad credit.
I have savings, she doesn't.
The max I can get on a credit card is £500 which is so low. My partner is offered 10k on a weekly basis.
We both are in our late 20's and have good jobs - joint income of 70k a year.
We applied for a mortgage with Halifax in Jan of this year and was declined due to my history.
Does this seem fair? Could anyone recommend a lender which would consider me? The way i see it is there's nothing to lose, expect my savings.
I have been trying too rebuild my credit for the last year, with credit cards, mobile contract etc.. I know it is working from what I am checking but it doesn't seem to be good enough for what banks are looking for.
Thanks for your time.

Use a broker. If your situation is in any way non-standard, including poor credit, don't just fire out applications to high street lenders - use a broker who will use their industry knowledge to select a lender he or she knows fits your circumstances. (If the only issue is a satisfied default, there will be one!)0
