  • Thank you very much for taking the time to explain , I never knew how involved this is as I've been with the same firm for 38 years .
I'll leave things as they are and will not contact the tax office until April 2018.
    Thank you
  • Well the last 6 months went by very fast and guess what? I've been contacted by the tax office and owe £1890 it seems I wasn't able to claim tax relieve as I've only worked 6 months of the financial year . All very worrying as I was told by a FA all would be ok

If HMRC are sending you a bill now for extra tax it will be for the 2016-2017 tax year. They wont yet be charging you tax for income since 6th April 2017.

That figure to me looks suspiciously like you have only paid 20% tax on your pension for the last tax year. Have you had a P60 from your pension provider? They have been sending out letters in the last few weeks about that tax year.
  • Hi Yes I was paying 40% on my pension. Taking £475 PM from a £9500 pension.
This really is strange as when I logged on to the tax gateway it was showing I'd under paid by £850 after I spoke to the tax office it increased to £1800 they said they would check it out and call back.
When they called back it was due to the tax relieve on my pension subs from April . As the only taxable income I'll have until April 2018 is this small pension I didn't want to have a very low tax code so I said I'd pay the £1800 now....................Well that has confused them ! I was told that's not possible due to the new system and that now the issue will be escalated ! I said again why is that as I'll pay right now over the phone = I was told that's not possible and they would call again tomorrow ( Friday)
As I'll be a lower tax payer from now on I really just want a normal tax code
    .
