Return and receipt of notice of charge and notice of transfer

Good evening,
I recently purchased a property and my solicitor lead me to believe I was due a £430 charge for:
Notice of transfer and notice of charge for both freeholder and management company (125+125+90+90)
I paid as they told my it was mandatory to register.
As the amount seemed quite absurd I contacted the freeholder and the management company.
The freeholder got back to me stating that only £50 were necessary and £250 were if I wanted a "receipt and return". Now, my solicitor requested it but do I really need it? The freeholder seems to be happy only to register me (any I guess refund £200!), what would that mean? I'm not sure what "receipt and return" is and why it is needed?
Can someone please help?
Thank you.

I received an email from the freeholder saying they have refunded the amount to my solicitor, but I am afraid my solicitor will just pay it back as they request the receipt and return, can I tell my solicitor not to do it?0
