Cleaning car upholstery

Good Morning chums, having been away for almost a week, and two small dogs and three children in my car the upholstery is looking decidedly tatty I have water stains on the back seat from damp dogs any ideas whats the best way to remove them (the stains not the small dogs or children) as I am changing my car in June. The local car cleaning place charge about £50.00 for a valet !!! bit too steep for me

I cleaned the seats in my car using carpet shampoo, rubbing over with a barely damp microfibre cloth until the stain lifted then rubbing over with a dry cloth a few times.

Think would work with washing powder though.

Hi Jackie . Have you thought of that good old old style standby Stardrops ? I've found it works well on pretty well anything .
I'm assuming you are talking about fabric seats .
I'd test a little diluted in a little warm water on a less obvious part of the upholstery using a damp cloth .
If all seems ok you can use a microfibre cloth ( although detergent can ruin them ) I would use a face flannel or some old toweling .
A spray bottle can be useful for a light mist and I have a small laundry brush which helps on stubborn stains .
As long as you test first and wipe over with a clean damp cloth after using the solution things should be fine .
Stardrops will leave the car smelling clean and fresh after the invasion of the boys :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Hope you all had a whale of a time .

I concur with the idea of dilute Stardrops and a mist sprayer. Also, if the dogs have shed hair on the seats, you can remove that first with masking tape wrapped around your hand with the sticky side outermost.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

Give it a good hoover to get rid of the hairs and the sand. Then wash the seats all over with a fairly rough cloth (eg old face flannel). You need to wash the whole seat rather than just the stained area, otherwise you will get a tidemark. Make sure the flannel is wrung out as dry as you can before rubbing the fabric - you don't want the seats to get wet through.

I think pretty much anything would work - fairy liquid, carpet cleaner, stardrops, washing powder. Don't be afraid to rub hard, car seat upholstery is tough stuff.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...
  • Tbh because in this house the seats need to be dry pdq, I do buy the car upholstery cleaner sprays from pound land and the like. They do work. Some need more elbow grease then others but they are usually dry within a few hours
