Personal Allowance reimbursement?

My co worker only worked a few months last FY, but had a full deduction on their pay. When will they receive the deductions back as their total income for that FY did not exceed the then (11k) limit?

They will now have to ask for it back from HMRC. Should be repaid fairly quickly (a few weeks at most hopefully).

I didn't think it was necessary to ask ? If there is no requirement to submit a self-assessment and the person is not registered as self-employed, wouldn't any refund from HMRC be automatic after their reconciliation at the end of the tax year ?

I have an interest as I also became 'economically inactive' last summer. and so have overpaid tax, but was expecting to just recieve a cheque from HMRC sometime this summer. as happened to my OH when he wad in a similar situation a couple of yearsback.

You are correct, for those not completing self assessment returns it is done automatically later this summer.

You won't get a cheque though, HMRC have a new system now where they send you a calculation showing the tax overpaid and you can go onto your personal tax account on gov.uk and arrange for the refund to be paid into your bank account.

There was big thread about it on Hot UK Deals website last year.

To be honest, I was looking at it from the position that now we're in a new tax year it can't be repaid through payroll so has to be refunded directly from HMRC. You may both be right as to the method, but why wait what may be several months when if you ask now you should get it a lot sooner?
  • I think if the coworker couldn't be bothered to get themselves at least onto the emergency code they are unlikely to be any more proactive now.

It'll be a pleasant surprise when the notification drops through the letterbox
