  • I'm quite tempted by this TV - it looks nice and the spec compares well with similar units in Argos costing £40 more. Aldi have a great returns policy and it comes with a 3 year warranty.

I'm just worried it might have the same lip sync problem people reported on the digital tuner in the bigger Tevion screens Aldi were selling last month, and I'd have liked it to offer an RCA component input too for my Freecom mediaplayer - it doesn't seem to (though it might have - Aldi specs are notoriously innaccurate).

I'll have a sniff around - see if I can find a more detailed spec somewhere.

    :)

Watch out for Aldi's returns policy, it ain't what it used to be. I had my fingers burned with a car radio/cd recently. Went wonky after five weeks, Aldi didn't want to know, send it back to the manufacturer, or at least their UK agent. Took weeks, and several phone calls. I've been an Aldi/Lidl/ Tchibo supporter for years, but with their new returns policy, Aldi can stick their electrical products where the sun don't shine. I'm still not sure if this new policy is legal, but try arguing with a shop manager who has his/her instructions, they are only employees trying to make a living, which means keeping to the party line.

That does not change the law one bit. You are entitled to your money back.

As for the LCD TV I was interested until I noticed the 'philips digital tuner'. I won't touch anything with philips associated with it.
    Nice to save.

Hmm... Interesting seeing as Phillips was the inventor of the CD and that all CDs carry a small royalty payment to Phillips. :D

    Yeah Right!.

Philips claim to have invented everything but perfected nothing. The cassette for instance would have never taken off but for the Japanese turning it into a decent Hi Fi medium.
    Nice to save.
  • I too once bought a Philips IDTV and have had nothing but problems with the built in digital tuner, constant popping and blocking, sometimes it just hangs altogether. Completely the opposite to the Toshiba I now use. Can you see them working instore before you buy? I would want to.
Just came across this, very similar but larger and no IDTV.

I returned a divx player last months (6 months old), just simply said it stopped working - no problem. I had just bought (the day before) a newer model they had on offer.

I feel a little bit like that about Philips. I bought one of their DTR1500 freeview boxes - brilliant sound and picture quality, but no EPG (just now and next). Rather than update it over the air the cynical swines brought out a new box, the DTR500, which had an EPG but was inferior in every other respect! Then they broadcast an 'update' for the DTR1500 which seemed to kill loads of them off - fortunately mine didn't die, but I somehow lost the remote so it's been relegated to the attic. The whole saga put me off Philips a bit I must say. You do read some real horror stories about their kit.

    :(
  • I've heard so much about the terrific Aldi warnties given, but it would seem now that Aldi leave you to battle (and I mean battle) with the manufacturers.

I bought he Medion PDA with Satnav from Aldi with a 3-year warranty. Having spent £30 on a proper case for this and litterally used it as a satnav device perhaps 50 times or so, I was to say the least a tad digruntled to receive a bill from the repair centre - having described the fault as "of my own doing - (i.e. my mishandling of the item)! The bill was for £120!!!! Best of all, if I wanted it back, there was a £60 admin and postage fee! The you wonder how they manage to sell on repaired items from their website - again, it seems a great way for them to have a "heads they win, tails you lose scenario - with a double win for them!!!!

The best thing of all, the fault I had was a recognised issue with a rebranded version of the same item (mio 168) - a loose charger socket. Two friend of mine and the same issue with 168's and had them repaired under MIO warranty!!!!

More recently a DVD player I bought (this time Tevion) now doesn't read any discs - again took back to Aldi and they told me to contact the manufacturer. Seriously - for the hassle - I'd rather not!

For me - the warranty isn't that good given the hassle I've had.

Be interested to hear of other DVDforum"ez" who been through this myre with Aldi.

  • I queued for one this morning. Apparently they only had 28 and the sales asst told us all to join the queue at the till and each handed one tv as we reached the front. There were only about 6 left when I left the store at 10.20

    Was it worth it?
Well, for the specs, it was unbeatable.
Picture quality waas as expected from a scart or dvb source. I do not have a HD source, so I cant tell how it would look.
Sound quality was atrocious though. For a Nicam stereo set, the quality was much poorer than my previous 15 year old mono Thorn crt tv.
As for the digital receiver, it seems weaker than my previous cheap tesco Techsonic model. It was unable to pick up any of the C5 channels. Does anyone know how to tune them in manually? Hence I find myself still using the stb.

    Overall, I'd rate it 6/10.
    Pros:
    Nice specs
    Loads of inputs
    Nice looking
    Cheap

    Cons:
    Poor sound
    Weak digital receiver
