Hi All,
I'm new to the thread so thank you for any responses.
I have got into a little predicament, I am 20 years old and since a young age I have always had a passion for working with animals.
I currently work full time in sales and to be honest I hate it but I won't get into the nitty gritty about the reasons. I work 8 - 5 which is 45 hours per week 5 days per week. I have got an interview for a zoo which I really love it's my dream job. The zoo job is part time and weekend only which I don't work in the sales job. In effect, I would work 7 days per week without overlapping any work hours.
In my contract for the sales job which Is fulltime it says:
23. Other employment
The Employee must devote the whole of his time, attention and abilities during his hours of work to his duties for the Employer. The employee may not, under any circumstance, whether directly or indirectly, undertake any other duties during his hours of work under this employment.
The Employee may not, without the prior written consent of the Employer (which will not be unreasonably withheld) outside his hours of work with the Employer work for, advise or in any other way assist, whether directly or indirectly, any business or employment which is similar to or in any way connected or in competition with the business of Employer or which could or might reasonably be considered to impair the Employee’s ability to act all times in the best interests of the Employer.
Can you please advise me on whether I am entitled to work for the zoo?
Along with this do I have to let my sales company know, I'm working for the zoo ect.
If I get the job what will I have to do?
Let's hope this is good news.
Thank you to all that reply and I'm more than happy to answer any questions.

Legalities aside, you're proposing to work just short of 70 hours/7 days a week? How long would it take you to burn out?0

That's way too many hours to be working in a week!
If I was in your position, given the zoo is my dream job, and assuming the interview goes well, I'd be asking them if they can offer a full-time job. If they can, then great, resign from the sales job.
If they cannot, then speak to your sales job manager. If you can work two jobs, then ask if they can reduce you to part-time hours. If they are unwilling to do that, then I would stay in the sales job and ask the zoo to consider you for full-time hours when they become available in the future.
You cannot work all day, seven days per week. As said above, you'll burn out.0 -
70 hours won't harm for a while, I'm doing the lowest ever at 55 - 60 now and it feels like part time:o.
I'd be tempted to ask the sales people if you can go part time and tell them why. If they decline, take the part time at the zoo, see if you can make it full time. If you can't, see if you can get another part time job that is secondary to the zoo job.0 -
Hi Guys,
Thank you for all the comments im over welhemed I apprecaite it. The zoo jobs is only part time hours. I would only be working 14 hours per week ontop of the 45.

I have a friend who works as a zoo keeper and while she loves it she says its knackering work and she does long days, especially if there is a sick animal in her section. So you'd have to see exactly what your duties would be and if you would be expected to stay late without notice.0

I think you'll find lots of people work these kind of hours for decades at a time, while you may not want to, doesn't mean the OP shouldn't at least give it a try, the most common theme in every successful persons story is holding down long hours or multiple jobs while young, while finding out where they want to go.
Nothing wrong with Graft.
OP, nothing in your contract sounds like you need to let them know, as long as you don't turn up on Monday morning smelling like a Zoo or unable to work because you're knackered (that would trigger the "impair the Employee’s ability to act all times in the best interests of the Employer" part).0 -
Hi,
I understand where you are coming from but honest this wouldn't bother me. The sales company is working for got me to leave the house at 4 am every day and for me to get back at 8 pm. This was every day for 3 months. In the interview they said would you take a full-time job and I stated that I definitely would do.

Hi,
Thank you for your answer I appreciate it. The Job is being a Children's Animal Man guy who pulls out all the rabbits, snakes and stuff for children to learn about.

Hi Martin,
That's great thank you It made me understand exactly what the part of the contract means. I am willing to do anything to get out of the job I'm so driven to work with animals. Unfortunately, I can't afford to just leave the sales job as much as I'd like to due to me not having any experience working within the zoo Industry.

I'd have a look at a book or something so you can be more specific about the "stuff".
Also, don't put the rabbits next to the snakes.0
