Hi, first of all, don;t panic. The bailiffs I've dealt with have (mainly) been more interested in getting something rather than nothing. Have you contacted the council direct? When something similar happened to me, I phoned the council and told them what I'd offered, and they were happy with that. They then told Rossendales (may they all get lost in the Sahara and eat each other) to accept it. Put your offer to them in writing, and include the first payment if you can.

Don't panic though, these people are paid to get money out of you, and if it isn't there there's not much they can do.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Even if it goes to an outside company, they still get involved. When I told Rossendales the debt was now clear, they got the Council involved. Send your budget, so they know you're not kidding, copy it to the bailiff company and enclose your payment. Good luck love!

Hi VM - First of all, try not to panic - you do have rights, when dealing with bailiffs, and also bailiffs must adhere to strict rules when collecting or attempting to collect a debt. For an overview of your rights, click on the following link:

I suggest that your first priority should be to contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, who will advise on how you can negotiate with the bailiffs, or, indeed, whether you could talk directly with the issuing council.

If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
