  • I don't do cookery books.
One cookery book is limiting, so to save money, just get all recipes online through websites or Youtube.

Much cheaper, saves room, and there are 100s to choose from rather than just a few in one book.

    Far more choice.

Pop Up Pirate....I LOVE having 'real' Cookery Books (as I suspect do many of the contributors to this thread!)

My shelf of Cookery Books is full of old friends. I love to sit down with them for a few minutes and remember past times....with a friend they remind you of past meetings - my cook books fall open at past recipes and remind me of the meals I cooked.

Yes, libraries and the internet give me access to hundreds of books....just as the internet gives me access to hundreds of people to chat to anonymously....but you still have your close circle of friends you go back to again and again....and so it is with my cook books. I might look online for a recipe once on a while...but I keep returning to my faithful loyal friends who never let me down with their tried and trusted recipes!.....(and once in a while I meet a new friend on the internet - I read a recipe, it sounds good - I make it and it is yum - I return to the recipe and find it says 'recipe is from the following book....' and so I arrange to 'meet' this potential friend...I look them up, find a few more details and invite them round - looking at a few more recipes online - maybe download a free sample to my Kindle - maybe look at a library copy.....and if the friendship develops, I invite my new friend to stay...and make room on my shelves for them to have a permanent home)

I am a very messy cook. Having a pc of any description near me is just not an option! :D

Diana Henry "Food from Plenty" - lots of interesting, unusual recipes that I wouldn't have necessarily thought of myself but without the need to buy masses of obscure, random ingredients to make them.

Exactly... the vast majority of personality/celebrity cookbooks are just so horribly generic.

    Well said Prinzessilein!

Up there with my favourite books, is my cook book stand, so much easier than trying to scroll on my phone, squinting, with messy hands. Ever tried swiping your phone screen with your elbow?

For those talking about Bero, you can order the latest book on their website for £2.99, rather than the £5-6 on Amazon and eBay. I've not had one, not seen one, but I want one now... I don't think my mother ever had one, but I still borrow the 'sampler' books she has from Sainbury's from the 80s - I am surprisingly fond of the American one.

  • I don't take a phone or computer into the kitchen lol

I look online before I start cooking and write down a recipe I like the look of. lol

If it turns out fine, I then file the recipe away for later
If it's a no go, I bin it.

I have a Mrs Beetons too...but that is to read, not to cook from.

I have a ancient Mrs beeton, that is a reading rather than cook book .. I had it several christmas's ago, my brother had got me a gift card as he did not know what to get me .. my mum was a great believer in gift cards/vouchers being given with a little something to unwrap, so when she saw a 1950's Mrs beeton for £1 in a jumble sale knew it was perfect to go with the gift card .. I loved it.

I love cook books in General and have far too many.

I don't take a phone or computer into the kitchen lol

Most expensive cooking mistake I ever made was smashing a laptop on my tiled kitchen floor when following a recipe on the screen, I was beating the mixture when I caught the laptop with my elbow - game over! I loved that computer more than cake itself!!
