  • I have sent secure messages using the given template and already have a response from Capital One who says we cannot put a hold on your account until you supply this, this and this...do I enter a dialogue with them or simply reiterate that Stepchange will be in touch with all the things they specify e.g. I and E?
    Many thanks!

    Hi,

Thank you so much for replying to me.

I know this will effect both myself and husbands credit score.

But after all this I never want to feel like this again.

I can’t get an appointment until near the end of
April with CAB so I might call SC today as I need to get it all sorted as soon as I can.

    Many thanks again.

Well done on taking that first very scary step:T. Please keep asking questions on here as we've all been in the same boat and have lots of experience that we're only too happy to share with people going through the same debt tunnel.

Please be patient when trying to talk to Stepchange. They have a huge volume of calls every day and sometimes it seems like forever before your call gets answered:(. Persist though, it's well worth it. When you speak to SC they'll talk you through your options and you don't have to commit to anything at that stage. Take some time to think about what you want to do. There are some very good tools on the SC website where you can play around with figures and so on without even speaking to anyone. It doesn't commit you to anything, you're not applying for a DMP at that stage, and is often very useful in clarifying lots of things.

    Good Luck:beer:

Thank you for replying to me, I really appreciate it.

I’m just panicking at the moment as it’s all new to me.

I have read through quite a lot of peoples different cases and it’s just being able to learn the process as I go on.

    Thank you again.
  • Hi Together72, im also on the start of my DMP journey and at the very beginning i was so scared but if i have learnt anything over the last few weeks it is that there is nothing to be scared of. All of my creditors have been helpful and sympathetic on the phone. Im going through Step Change and they are the nicest bunch of people! Im only starting mine on 01 May as im building an emergency fund up.

I opened a new basic bank account with Santander (with a debit card top up), cancelled all my direct debits to creditors, contacted them all to advice i was seeking assistance from step change and i would keep them updated with any progress.

I am like a different person now the burden has been lifted.

Go on to the Step Change website and have a look at their Debt Remedy tool, entering in all your income and expenses it will give you an idea how much you could be paying back a month at an affordable level.

    https://www.stepchange.org/Debtremedy.aspx

Please feel feel to message me anytime and ill help anyway i can, that goes for anyone reading this, i dont know it all but im definitely well informed, researched and ready to beat this!
learning to live again, slowly but determined £30k in debt, but dealing with it and proud

Thanks for posting the SC Debt remedy tool link for Together72:T. When I replied earlier I was in a rush and didn't have the time to find the link:o

I'm so happy that things are working out well for you:beer:. I started my DMP in 2013 in a total panic, partly because I hadn't then found this thread and the wonderfully supportive people who post on it. I agree with you about SC, they were wonderful:j. I decided to self-manage after 4 years with them only because by then I wanted the flexibility to arrange F&Fs etc. I couldn't have coped without SC in the early years though. I can never thank them enough.
  • Hi,

Thank you for replying to me.

I have just spoken with SC and I have sorted it all out with the most helpful lady.

Some parts are daunting but you do see there is a solution.

I was worried about getting a new bank account but if it’s just the basic one that lets me pay my household bills that’s just perfect for me now.

Do you know how long it takes to arrange
    them please?

    Many thanks.

    Do I do this online?

Thank you all again, I’m so pleased I got the courage to ask the questions.

If you mean how long it takes to open a new bank account and whether you can do it online please make sure before you start that you pick a bank where you have no debts whether through a credit card or anything else. Also, a lot of financial institutions are associated with one another, under the 'same umbrella' so to speak so make sure you find a bank that is a standalone one if you have debts with various institutions.

It's very easy to open a basic account online, a lot of us did it:j. I think a few banks need you to go and do it in branch though. Several posters on here opened an account with Nationwide, including me. Simplicity itself to open online, absolutely no branch contact required. It can be totally run online too and you get a debit card with it and have the facility to set up DDs and SOs. What you don't get is an overdraft and a chequebook but I've lived happily without those for the past 5 years. I've been delighted with Nationwide but, of course, other banks are also available;)

You get a pretty instant decision of acceptance but you'll have to wait for various things to reach you by post (such as debit card and PIN). The Easter holiday might slow things down a bit. I can't recall how long everything took from start to finish, sorry:o. Someone else might be able to help you with that.

Hi,I've just started with SC and they have been brilliant so far,my second payment goes out on Saturday.I opened an account with Nationwide because they weren't connected to my debts, I went into my branch because i didn't realise you could open an account online,it took a couple of weeks for my debit card to come through and it's been running smoothly ever since ,I have since opened two saving accounts with Nationwide but I did this online and they were up and running instantly,I now have a savings account with an emergency fund which was started with the money that would have gone to my creditors if I had paid them and a savings account for Xmas which is budgeted for this year for the first time ever in my life
I was really scared when I first came here and everyone told me it would be ok and it has been
    Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,510 Owed = £11,120
  • Thank you, I’m going to look at the options and get it sorted ASAP.

The savings accounts sound like a good plan too.

I must say I feel a lot more positive since I put my original post on here this morning.

    Thank you all again.
