I have a tried and tested (and always successful) recipie for christmas cake. What I am wondering is, is it too early to make it. I am trying to be MSE and organized this year so I have bought all the ingredients. It is my day off tomorrow so I thought I would make it. Has anybody made thiers yet? are you planning to? and if so when? Thanks

ooh fancy posting the recipe? It's been ages since I [STRIKE]cremated[/STRIKE] baked a cake. I will join you in making it
I seem to remember my Mum always made the cake at the beginning of October then laced it with booze weekly until christmas.

I am planning on making mine on 21st October, I usually make it around the third weekend in October and it's always been lush! I feed it brandy once a week up till I ice it on Christmas eve. I keep it wrapped in greaseproof paper and foilf in a cake tin (ok an old biscuit tin!!!)
I'm sure it will be fine if you make it tomorrow as long as you store it properly*** PROPHECY_GRRL****** DEBT FREE AS OF 17/10/11 - I DID IT!!! ***0 -
I wil be putting my fruit in brandy to soak tomorrow morning (friday) and then will be baking the cake on saturday afternoon.
Got loads of tips and advice from forum members on the old style saving board. So A BIG thanks to all of them
The receipe I am using is delias - its got rave reviews on other boards so fingers crossed.
Good luck everyone baking your christmas cakes

I love christmas cake, but my kids and the rest of the family hateit. My Husband is Canadian so anything other than chocolate in cakes makes no sense to him. Feels a bit indulgent buying ingredients just for me.:A

Delia's recipe is fantastic...and I usually make mine early to mid-October so that there is time for it to mature. I'm also a bit disorganised in the run up to Christmas, so I try to get the cakes done early so that they're all finished. I make 3 every year - not all for us - I give them to inlaws and parents.

Making one for mom tomorrow - along with a christmas pudding! They're visiting from Brum (we're in manchester) on saturday, and won't be visiting again before christmas so this is delivery time.. then mum will feed it between now and christmas. Both should be fine - we've eaten year old christmas pud from that recipe and they've been fine too.
As for ours.. probably in a couple weeksI'm using my own recipe that is a sort of combination of Delia and Nigella's and sized to fit a large square tin i have. Christmas pud recipe is from a now-out-of-print book and is the best xmas pud recipe i've ever come across - no suet, no mixed peel, just lots of lovely booze (its not called rich and boozy xmas pud for nothing). I've been making it for years. Also gonna make mincemeat and pickled onions (the pickled onions tonight i think!) and some strawberry Jam (tonight!)

I made mine 2 weeks ago!
I soaked my fruit for about 5 days I think, but couldn't wait any longer before making them!
I've made some mini ones for hampers and they come out smelling gorgeous and soft.
I don't think I'll have to lace mine too often because it already smells so strong! Haha.
I'll post up the recipe if anyone's interested.0 -
Right thanks everyone. I am going to soak the fruit now. I hadn't thought of doing that before. Well it will give me an excuse to open the brandy. so don't expect any sensible posts from now on tonight.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:
