Cleaning a Couch and Curtains

Options
Hi there. Am having to move out after landlord raised rent by £175 . The lettings agency have said that curtains and couch need to be steam cleaned! ~Cant afford that I dont think!

Any idea on how i can do this myself economically? Not sure what the curtains are made of but they arent lined. Can i put them in the washing machine?

Any ideas on how to clean upholstery? No obvious marks but probably the odd glass of red wine has been spilled (what a waste!)

Any suggestions out there warmly welcomed!
Thanks

You need first to check what evidence they will need that the couch and curtains have been steam cleaned. If they want receipts from a professional company, then you'll have to bite the bullet. Also bear in mind that if you try to clean something yourself and ruin it (and curtains in particular are renowned for shrinking when cleaned) then this will cost you more than the steam cleaning would have.

That being said, and at your own risk, for the couch I would give it a sponge bath with warm soapy water (ideally bio washing liquid or powder). Don't get it too wet and try to dry it quickly otherwise it may smell.

For the curtains, you could either wash on the coolest temperature possible in your machine and remove immediately the cycle has ended and hang up at once. They will dry on the windows. Beware that they may well shrink even on a cool wash or become so wrinkled that they are beyond ironing, particularly if you don't know what fabric they are made of. Alternatively you could have them dry cleaned, but that would probably cost more than a steam clean.

If you look on the house buying and renting board there are usually loads of threads about moving out cleans

Just a thought, but you have actually checked your contract to see that you are required to do this i assume.
