Why don't you just see if your employer will let you take the 3 months off to go travelling, then when you come back start job hunting

If your employer agrees, you still have a job waiting if you are going to need income + your CV will rightly not show a gap. Even if you don't ever go back to the company you are in now, you can give notice at any time and that would be your offical end date - all this rides on them saying yes to the travel break though.
People don't know what they want until you show them.

    Hi there,

So I've asked around today and according to one of the longest-serving employees here the chances of being granted a sabbatical are extremely unlikely. The longest you can take is 3 weeks in one block and even that requires all sorts of approval :(

That's paid leave though, by the sound of it.

Obviously it depends on the business, but granting an unpaid sabbatical means that they don't have the trouble and expense of replacing you, which might take a couple of months anyway. You just go away and then come back. If there's a high turnover of staff anyway this is much less of an issue for them.

That said, if you have no intention of returning after the break then I would not recommend you do this. You will just !!!! them off.

    The best thing to do?

Find a new job, but when you are in the interview, explain that you would like 2-3 months off between the old role and this one so could you delay your start date?

If the employer wants you enough they will wait for you.

Then you can resign, have your 3 months off and have a job to go to.

You've hit the nail on the head there.. I have absolutely no intention to return to my current employer after taking this break! I'm using the need to leave as an excuse to go on a relaxing getaway :)

I had considered doing it this way, but the problem for me at the moment is time. I have all the time in the world to apply for jobs but very little to take telephone interviews not to mention attend face to face interviews. I'm also considering relocating as the nature of the work I wish to pursue seems more concentrated in other cities like Manchester and Leeds making it's a logistical nightmare.

I just feel like I was free from this place I could put all my effort into applying for those jobs in other cities, my only concern would be how those potential employers would view my decision to resign.

At the end of the day I know that, you know that, and I think any prospective employer is going to know that. So don't worry about the time you are away, that's not going to matter. Just have a sensible answer prepared as to why you didn't want to carry on in that company.

Contrary to popular opinion, I have never found that people have a problem with you saying you just didn't care for one particular job, especially if the rest of your work record is solid.
