Lysine tablets....any good?

Ive suffered with cold sores since my teens{ Im now 46}. They seem to be happening more frequently. I had a cold sore in January, and have 2 more raise their ugly selves this morning{ poorly with a cold}. Reading that lysine tablets can lessen outbreaks if taken daily, and I wondered if other people have tried them, and with any success, as Holland and Barrett have them on offer at the moment? many thanks, and awaiting any advice or help, :j

Yes I used to find that they helped me, do an internet search for foods containing Arginine and try and avoid these too.

Eventually I bought a light stick thingy and after about two winters (many years ago) I stopped getting them at all. In the last 2 years it has been discovered that I have an immuno deficiency condition so have had a couple of outbreaks again, but the light sees them off pretty quickly.

Sunlight triggers mine as well, so for most of the year I use a lip salve stick with spf in.

DH suffers from cold sores especially when it's sunny and he swears by lyseine. And he doesn't really believe in these types of remedies :)

My sister uses a supplement and also a lysine cream, to great effect.

I use a lip balm containing lysine and that seems to have helped me too.

I wouldn't bother paying the extra. Just tweak your diet to include real foods that are high in lysine. For example, see:

  • As above.

  • i found it very effective with one or two tablets only needed but it did cause palpitations and general not great feeling. Everyone is different, using an spf lip balm or even propolis lip balm may help

I had really bad coldsores for nearly a year. Horrible scabby ones that split everytime I moved my mouth (sorry - tmi!!) BUT, Lysine was my saviour. I can't remember how long they took to work but it was reasonably quick. See what Holland and Barrett do. I think I got mine from there.

Lysine can have benefits to the heart and circulatory system. It's part of the Pauling therapy to reverse heart disease.

You can purchase quantities of the pure amino acid Lysine from most body building supplement suppliers which would be cheaper than buying tablets and provide far more of it.

The problem with eating high Lysine containing foods is that it also contains arginine which can increase the problem you are attempting to stop.

Something to research would be colloidal silver with DMSO. You have to be extremely careful using DMSO as it is a solvent which can force anything on the skin deep into the skin including bacteria therefore washing the skin and sterilizing it would be beneficial. Used with Colloidal silver it could force the silver into the skin, into the nerves where the virus hides and could potentially destroy the virus.

If you search for "colloidal silver herpes simplex" it will show many results. There are some creams/gels containing colloidal silver which might be worth investigating for use on the cold sore. If you get some of that and some DMSO gel and mix them carefully in a glass container with a glass implement and then apply it, it should have far greater effect. The advice for cleaning and sterelizing the area still goes.
  • I take one a day during the summer and it keeps me cold sore free.

Gelatin and sunlight are my triggers!!!
