Loyalty card changes - could we see minimum spends?

I don't think any supermarket wants to ditch the loyalty schemes as the shopping habit data they get from it is very very valuable. But I do think they will keep reducing the benefits until they are almost worthless and people just swipe the cards out of habit.0

Of the big four supermarkets - Asda is the one that is losing ground the most. Is it a coincidence that it doesn't have a loyalty card, I suspect the other three don't think so!!I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0

I think I meant ditch any so called benefits.
Strangely enough, my data should tell them that I buy very little there except YS items, some offers and things that aren't available in Aldi. I wonder what they make of that??0 -
Make sure you are opted in for mail promotions. I wasn't with Nectar until a few weeks ago and on Saturday, I got a 2000 point coupon in the post when I spent £1 or more! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Morrison's are cutting their More points on petrol from May - 5 per litre (think it's currently 10 per litre)0

I have a loyalty card for just about any store I can reasonably say I shop at that does one.
BUT I do not base any of my shopping decisions on these loyalty schemes, I always go on what costs me the least money, not what will give me the best points for my loyalty card, I just have them so that when I do shop there I get something back, even if it is 1p.
I do think the deals are dwindling so much that in time they won't really be worth anything.Debt Free Stage 1 - Completed 27/08/2020

Between myself and husband we have loyalty cards for Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Nectar, Tesco, Holland and Barrett, Iceland, Morrisons and Co-op. Like Florence J, we wouldn't make a decision on which supermarket to use, based on loyalty points.
It's just a bonus of you get a coupon or a freebie or the occasional £2.50 voucher.
Ocado is a bit different. I pay for a free delivery SmartPass and if I shop enough during the year it makes that cost neutral. If you have a SmartPass you can get 10% off lots of things. Many brands are price checked against Tesco, so you get a voucher if your shop was more expensive. I did four shops in about six weeks recently so I got a £10 voucher for the frequency. Another way to get money out of Ocado is to give them any carrier bags you have and you get 5p for each one.0 -
Well Nectar effectively has a minimum spend of £500 to see any benefits (excluding bonus point gains), as you need 500 points to save £2.50.
.
I know you say "excluding bonus point gains" but there are some great opportunities to be had
I spent all my nectar points at xmas and now I'm back up to almost £300 again but I haven't spent anywhere near £60,000 (I doubt I've even spent the £300 that my points are now worth!)
Just this month I've taken out life insurance and a credit card that will bring in another 44,000/£220 points before the end of the year. The credit card means I can earn nectar points everywhere I shop....even when I'm in Tesco and earning points with my ClubcardApparently, everybody knows that the bird is [strike]the word[/strike] a moorhen0 -
Tesco Clubcard needs 100 points to get a £1 voucher so its a £100 minimum spend.
They don't mail you vouchers unless you've earned 150 points in a quarter. By your logic that's £150 but again there are deals that help you earn faster
eg right now if you buy £25 of Disney toys you get 500 pointsApparently, everybody knows that the bird is [strike]the word[/strike] a moorhen0 -
We don't spend huge amounts in supermarkets because meat, fish, bread, eggs, fruit and veg are bought from local shops or markets which are better quality and much cheaper. Cakes etc are home made. As a result we don't worry about loyalty cards much.
We are moving soon to an even more rural area where the only 2 supermarkets are Waitrose and Lidl, should be interesting0
