If you've been there less than two years, probably the entrance to the jobcentre.
  • Although we have a culture of this over work. Can normally do 1-3 hours extra each week un paid, I'd begun thinking about an assertive course but don't know that it would help because it just seems worse with shift work and notice the rota isn't always realistic.

Anyway at our place, the rule is it's only overtime when they (the employer) specifically ask you to stay.

Guess you could keep a record and bring it up review time? (if nothing else)

When you say 'required to work late' is that due to a direct demand from a manager or simply to clear the outstanding work.

Usually it's expected and unspoken but sometimes a direct instruction from manager.

If you have to wait for other people, why not just come in later?

You need to manage your time better within the terms of your employment.

You also need to start setting expectations on deadlines for the work flow, for the really important stuff that needs doing same day you need it in time to do the work.

If waiting on peoples output if it is not done by certain times it goes into your next days workload and any overun is their responsibility not yours.

if getting given work late ask for priorities so something can give to the next day.

This may take some time to get the message across but if they all know that they hand work to you near the end of your shift and you will pick it up they will keep doing it.

Maybe if you have a good visibility of the important workflows you can pick your days to do the later shift, hey guys I a working late Thursday I need x,y,z ready by 4pm, don't leave it to Friday I won't be able to do it.

something needs to change if it happens a lot if not paid ways to get the time back and some rules about how you take back accumulated hours, like can you add to the start end of holidays or take full days off.

They must have a system to cover your holidays/sick so there may be a way to manage the time back that way.

You need to discuss the workflow with your manager if you are constantly having to work late. I don't personally see that coming in later should be the resolution. I'd much rather start early and finish early, not be forced to lose my free time after work because of poor organisation by others.
You said that your job is unique within the department, but somebody else must do the work when you're not there. That being the case, why can't the role be done by somebody else on occasion anyway?
