I wouldn't offer a job to someone I interviewed if they told me they had called in sick to their current job to attend the interview

Dont blame you. Who said anything about calling in sick? Many are forced to take a days annual leave or take a day off unpaid as interviewers won't work around candidates.

I once said I am attending the funeral of a friend of the family. As get paid for relatives funerals, but not friends.

Plus if anyone from your current work spots you on that day - especially if job interview is near to your work or a colleague takes same bus as you, you have an excuse to why are you dressed up smart

This is the problem for me at the minute. My current workplace is casual dress so it becomes blatantly obvious that I'm interviewing if I turn up in smart dress. I have actually managed to attend two interviews in January after requesting that I attend in my usual smart-casual work outfits and although they seemed fine with it I wouldn't be surprised if it had some bearing on my not getting either of the jobs.

I have in the past just taken a a change of clothes in the car and got changed in a car park somewhere. Of course if you can't drive to work this isn't feasible.

In one of my old jobs, we only had 3 days leave available to take when required (The rest were fixed holidays).

We also didn't get time in lieu except for very particular circumstances - and I used to volunteer for them to get that extra flexibility.

We also weren't allowed unpaid leave

Doctors appointments etc weren't paid, neither was sick leave.

This is the only job where I have ever phoned in sick for a job interview, as it was the only way I could attend it (It was a public sector job I was interviewing for and they wouldn't rearrange for outside office hours)

Normally, I would take annual leave, time in lieu etc

Dont see why that's relevent, If people say he knows I am attending a job interview he really has nothing really to gain by saying this. Best keep his gob shut in my opinion.

If he gives the other answer, he thinks I am taking a days leave who is to know?

I don't think it's a relevant question either. It's well known that in most of the private sector taking time off to attend an interview can be a bit of a cloak and dagger affair, so why ask about it?

Sometimes people have no other way of taking the time off other than to call in sick.

I think there are a small number of jobs (like the one TammyKitty dscribs) where there is no alternative option, but other than that, it is relevent because as a potential employer, it is relevant to me to know if you are the kind of person who is willing to lie to your employer and to use their time not your own for personal matters.

If you have the kind of employer which is so rigid thatyou literally can't take time off you can mention that rigidity as part of your reason for looking for a new job.

I get your point, but I'm not sure whether or not you've lied to get time off from the job you're leaving is a good indicator of whether you're a fine and upstanding person.

It may simply be a measure of how desperate you are to get out of a job that isn't working. And if you're that desperate you will leave by fair means or foul.

Wouldn't telling the truth though potentially lead to repercussions for the individual at that company if they didn't get the job. Bit of a no win situation. Don't see there is any need to say to your employer, "By the way boss, can I take time off to attend an interview with one of your competitors?". Think you are shooting yourself in the foot.
