I was just wondering, if you were the cyclist in this video, would you report the dangerously close pass approximately 27 seconds in?

The Vauxhall Vivaro van has a completely empty overtaking lane, yet drives at speed, so close to the cyclist that it's sheer luck that he wasn't seriously injured.
If you though that it might help make the roads safer, would you report this to the police? What action (if any) do you think ought to be taken against the driver?

This goes back to the thread about helmet cams - you cannot on that clip anyway, see the plate to be able to prove it, you can't prove who was driving. Report it if you want, police might send them a "drive better" sort of letter but a white van could be an individual, a trader, a business, little will come of it.
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The driver of the van committed an offence, the cyclists statement and the video are evidence of that offence.
The police could require the keeper to name the driver and then take action against the driver. I'd reportit and complain if the police take no action.0 -
YesI'd both report it and follow it up with a complaint if no action was taken.
Yes, they probably can't get a conviction of any sort off the back of it but the simple fact that the police turn up and question the registered keeper will make them think more carefully about their driving in future.
It could stop them doing the same again in the future and potentially killing someone.0 -

No I wouldn't , looking at the posters other videos it appears he is cycling around looking for trouble, it amazes me that he has so many incidents, could it be his bike is not lit and is not wearing high visibilty clothing? Not to add he is cycling at speed on a foot path, himself could have caused injury to someone exiting a garden.0 -
Only if I thought action would be takenConsidering it is on video i have chosen the "Only if I thought action would be taken " option but i would be very surprised if any action was taken.
This kind of overtake is far to common when riding a bike but i've never heard of anyone being prosecuted unless an accident had taken place.0 -
S172RTA requires a registered keeper to name the driver at the time. To fail to name a driver is a 6 point offence. The form is usually sent along with an NIP, if the keeper is not local.
We have several officers on our unit (me included) who would take on an enquiry based on videos like this. It's definitely careless/inconsiderate at least. West Mids have recently run a high profile operation to make drivers aware through enforcement and publicity that they need to give cyclists 1.5 metres to allow them to feel safe, and anything less is inconsiderate.
So, yes, you can report it, and it should be looked into. But I can't speak for the degree of enthusiasm with which it will be investigated in your area.Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.0 -

You genuinely think that the cyclist in this video is more of a danger to others than the van driver? My word.
I am a cyclist too, that van passing shouldn't be a rare occurance, the cyclists have to look out for themselves just as much as other road users be aware of them. I didn't like in the other videos that where he approached drivers to give verbal they were always women, I fear he will land himself in trouble much before trouble finds him.0 -

There's a lot of compression artifacts from the transcoding to Youtube which isn't unusual when going from one highly compressed video format from another, the fact that the OP has specified the registration plate a couple of times suggests it's easily readable in the existing format.
esuhl, personally I don't think I'd report the vehicle as I can't see them doing anything further with it however as you have the footage I doubt it would take much work to report it.

Yes I'd report him, apparently in North Wales there is a campaign going on where the police are taking it seriously and cracking down. Let's hope so.0
