Anyone from Manchester...M13?

Hi all,

I have been offered a council house in Birch Lane M13. I looked up the area online and it looked very frightening, I know stuff online can be a little exaggerated but there is so much on the locality./ Can someone tell me what it is like who knows of the area?
I really need this home and it's perfect (maybe not the location) and I can't afford to rent privately.

My family is Catholic, mixed race, white and black and simply want somewhere safe and quiet.

It's Longsight. It's not the best part of Manchester. But if you ever need to go to hospital, it's handily close.

Seriously, what do you want to know? Are you in a situation where you have a choice? An area is only as good as the people in it, so if you are "decent" people then your presence will raise the level of "decency" in the area.

If you're worried about crime, have a look at the crimestats here: https://www.police.uk/greater-manchester/EC05/

Longsight market is pretty good :)

  • I want to know if the area lives up to it's reputation. Is it an unsafe ghetto? would a family of women be ok there? Sometimes an areas reputation can be an exaggeration.
Beggars can't be choosers and the house is lovely, but I would forgo my opportunity if the area is as gang ridden, dangerous and 'no go' as youtube for eg claims...

The crimestats page will answer that question for you. If it helps for a comparison, I live in another part of east Manchester; we have approximately one crime listed for our street each month (occasionally two). I wouldn't describe our street as unsafe or a ghetto.

Remember that people only tend to post interesting / bad videos; and that news articles will only report problems, not good things. Talking of which, have you had a look at the Manchester Evening News website to see how many articles reference Longsight?

We used to live in Gorton. That has a horrendous reputation. We lived in a quiet cul-de-sac, never saw any trouble, never had any issues, never felt scared walking back from the railway station. So everywhere has good parts and bad parts. I'm afraid I don't know if Birch Lane is a good or bad part of Longsight.
