Just got an email, from the 3rd of April you will need to purchase something to get a free coffee at Waitrose. Won't be able to just get a completely free cup anymore.

about time too, the number of people and nearby workers who just go in for the coffee alone in my local store is quite staggering.

It was inevitable as so many people were abusing the spirit of the offer.

I see that MSE are already suggesting a way to keep abusing the spirit of the offer.

The whole idea of this scheme was to reward people who do their shopping with them not just, as MSE suggest, how to go in and get a coffee at the cheapest possible price.

IMO they should put a minimum spend as a condition like they do with the free newspaper. Until they do it will keep being abused.

Or you could just save a cup from previous purchase and use the machine. There's always a way!

the coffee machine in my local Waitrose is right near the welcome desk (and the security guard!) so I don't fancy anybody's chances of trying to pull that trick.

I agree wholeheartedly with redfox there should be a minimum spend. Otherwise the taking of the p*** will continue and probably ultimately lead to it being discontinued for all. :(

The MSE news story headline is quite mis-leading too. They aren't stopping the free tea and coffee deal. Just changing to free with a purchase.

Are you surprised...the quality of journalism on this site is outrageously poor.

In my local Waitrose there is a cafe as well as the standalone machines. If you upgrade to a "large" coffee, the 30p difference counts as a purchase :money:

I just don't get it. Waitrose free coffee is unimbibable - so much so, I started a thread about it.

MSE in "encourage everyone to be a massive cheapskate in order to ruin nice perks for everyone else who abides by the spirit of them" shocker.

Buying 10p bags for life just to get free coffee will just lead to checkouts being clogged with people buying bags and then the offer getting removed. MSE doesn't care because it wants to appeal to people who think being a !!!!!!!!!! (sorry, "fre*loader" because for some reason that word is banned) is "savvy".

    Pathetic.
