I'd suggest you strike off anything healthcare related. You're not committed to the level of (ongoing) training involved and you don't have the people skills it requires (or the attitude/ aptitude to develop these).

I agree 100%. I'm not cut out for those roles.
  • Good afternoon. There are so many professions connected with the computer, from the designer to the programmer. Each requires certain skills and experience.
If u wanna be a web development:
The best option is to go to courses, try to search in your city courses where you will be taught some programming language or technology. Also appreciate availability of vacancies in the market, before you decide something. That would get an initial experience I advice don't wait until you read all the books on the chosen programming language. Begin to write your first lines of code after the second chapter of the book. Complete all tasks from books, reprint examples, understand them. Complicate examples and assignments from books with your ideas. Create your own tasks for the material you have covered. Solve these problems.Just look for familiar programmers, maybe they will help you.
    Good luck)

A job where I can grow old and not run the risk of having to report to a person half my age (something which I would find mortifying).

I manage people too, like your son does. The older ones are fine. The younger ones are the problem.

So you don't want to be managed by someone younger than you. And you don't like managing people who are younger. This is going to be tricky.

Putting together conferences must involve some transferable skills - at your stage in life I think you need to concentrate on those and develop them, rather than starting something completely new. How about starting your own conference organising business?

Thanks for that. Yes, something alone these lines would be good for me. I have no idea (at the moment) which areas to look at, but this is a good start.

That post is from someone building up his post count so he can spam, so I wouldn't place too much value on it.

And as I become more experienced in whatever I am doing I fail to see how I will be doomed to report to someone with a spotty face for very long.

Because however experienced you get at doing something does not mean you will be qualified to work as a manager in that field. In IT you may be an expert programmer but you will report to someone who may be a project manager but can't code for toffee.

Don't worry. I have plenty of experience in working for people who can't do my job (sometimes even their own job) for toffee.

Are you sure it's the younger ones that are the problem? You're not coming across as the most flexible of people, you've lots of preconceived ideas that wouldn't make you an attractive employee.

As for radiology, are you willing to take a degree, and possibly an access course before that? You are aware that you'll be touching a lot of people, including children and young people?

Christ i thought Savile was long dead...

Think the OP needs to start his own company as he sounds as flexible as my dead nana.

Its hard to know what to suggest..id say Plant operator on building sites as huge shortage or Security, money is lousy but anyone with a bit of savvy can make some decent money if your running the show.

What about marketing? You've basically been doing events management, that must transfer quite well?

    Other suggestions:

Accountancy? (Lots of training and exams tho)

    Hospitality? i.e. hotel work

Some sort of entry-level management - do you think you'd be up to doing an MBA?

    Civil service?

    Information management?
    Mortgage when started: £330,995
