    I have also been thinking about whether to get a camera after far too many close passes and nearly being doored the other day (coincidentally outside of the hospital!! ).

    A friend recommended Campark bullet cameras for helmets but I do not know anything about the quality.

    From looking about I think things to consider are:

    * Battery life - for my commute, I want >= 2hours.
    * Waterproof against rain
    * Some form of loop recording with overwriting
    * Orientation sensor
    * Low light ability (I want to use all year round)
    * Microphone ( some form of sound recording )
    Nice to have:
    * Connection to phone
    * Small form factor (bullet?) for helmet

    You can buy any of Go Pro cameras and all of them are good. there is no special features on 4 or 5 edition, just buy one that you like.

    I saw this video the other day. I was really impressed with the quality. According to the comments, it was filmed on a Sony AS200V.

    Unfortunately it's not cheap, and... I've completely avoided Sony products since they got caught illegally hacking PCs with rootkits.

    Great quality video, though, wouldn't you say?

    In my experience of cycling on a daily basis the most aggressive cyclists I find are the ones who have helmet cameras.

    And...?

    Are you suggesting that a cyclist shouldn't buy a camera in case it makes them aggressive? :rotfl:

    I know.

    People look for things way too much (& it's something i see a LOT of on this message board).

    Whatever happened to .... poster asks question about something, in this case a recommendation of a camera.

    Then we have people who read the thread. Some who can't recommend, don't know a product .... they then close the page (yes believe me, it's possible).
    And then others who can actually help, so they respond with something helpful.

    Such a crazy idea isn't it?

    But then some feel the need to have little jabs & comments that aren't helpful in the slightest.

    I'm not highlighting MABLE here. It's just that post made me think of this. It happens throughout this message board really.
  • Well something happened today which made me think back to this thread and more specifically the people who say you shouldn't have a cam, don't need a cam, the aggressive ones are the camera owners so on & so forth (basically negative comments).

    My wife cycled to work this morning and then again on the way home. Part of the route home is going over a bridge which isn't narrow at all. It's plenty wide enough to have a couple walking together with a bike overtaking them & comfortably too.

    Anyway she approaches these 4 people & tings her bell to let them know she wants past.

    Now i know it's stereotyping but they appeared to be the sort you'd usually see on Jeremy Kyle in a morning. This doesn't mean they're up to no good but it just makes you cautious.

    She said these people would've been in probably their early - mid 20s.

    Anyway so one of them moves over to let her past. She purposely does not cycle close to them. She wouldn't do anyway when overtaking someone but even moreso with these people - don't want to take any chances.

    So as she's pedalling past what does the lad do who's just tucked in? He lunges out with his leg & shoulder in an attempt to knock my wife off her bike, probably not happy that she 'dared' to ting her bell just to ask him to tuck in for a second.

    She said the only reason he didn't connect is the fact she purposely picked up speed to overtake and he lunged a little late. He only narrowly missed her anyway.

    I know some would say what would a camera have done. It wouldn't have stopped this idiot of course.

    But the point is you never know what's going to happen. What if he had hit her? What if she'd fallen and seriously injured herself as a result - broken wrist, dislocation of whatever joint, the injury list could be anything - the point is you don't know what will happen, anything or nothing could happen.

    Now i don't know how it all works but maybe with camera evidence you could take that further (if in this instance he'd have connected resulting in injury) & go the compensation route.

    So i think having a camera is probably a good idea just for the simple reason of - you never know what idiot you're going to come across.
