Being Debt Free

You're being too sensitive! :rotfl:
I love the fact that debt free people still post on here (well, some do). It's nice that they still take an interest in those of us who are still struggling.
And it definitely gives us hope. Shellgirl's suggestion is very good though, it would show that paying off debt takes time but is achievable. Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

I DO have one of the aforementioned signatures (sorry!!) but I am proud of what I achieved. I worked bloody hard and literally every single day to clear my £25,000 debt with the DFW board and MSE in general.
I think (well, I would hope) that my sig would be seen as a light at the end of the tunnel - an 'if someone else can do it, so can I' kind of idea.
I still use and need the DFW'ers and the board - I don't have as much to contribute now as I've completed my journey, but if I disappeared off I'd probably end up spending stupidly again. I'd rather see my sig each time I post and smile because it re-affirms what I've achieved.
It would be a bit like me going to a slimming club and knowing I have tonnes of weight to lose (which I do!!!) but then being very upset by those who have reached their target weight but still come along each week to be weighed for free - I wouldn't feel they were rubbing my nose in it, I'd be thinking - wow, well done you - and even more well done for coming back to keep yourself in check after such a long and difficult journey.
My two penn'eth anyway.........."Stay Wonky":D

I agree with the others, some of the people on here will be in debt for a long time and tbh sometimes I feel very down about my debts, but it does cheer me up that if others have managed it then so can I.
Personally I will be so proud when I can write off one of my debts never mind all of them and I think everyone of us will be jumping for you when we are debt free. It would be crazy not to be pleased!
It is also nice to have people like you who have done their time about and still kindly giving advice and inspiration. In some ways I have often wondered whether some people stay around to keep them debt free and for some of the posters on here, if not all, that is one thing we will still have to worry about when we are debt free and its an important thing to learn.Debt Free - done
Mortgage Free - done

You could also, in that sort of situation switch your signature off if you wanted to.0

I posted a message of sympathy and support, but then felt that it was a little bit insensitive to have it followed with a message of "HEYYY!!! I DON'T HAVE ANY DEBTS AT ALL ANYMORE!!!"
It's also saying: "I have been in the place where you are, and I have walked the path that you want to walk."
Currently your sig could be saying: "Bailed out by Mummy since the day I was born, and never been in debt." True?"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
"We were born and raised in a summer haze." Adele 'Someone like you.'

Okay - our signatures do say quite a lot about us, but sometimes they could be unintentionally percieved as a bit 'arrogant'.
I was proud to put my bankruptcy date, and early discharge date in mine, but it does not mean that I am 'debt free' - or that I'm pleased to have gone down the bankruptcy route, although most posters will know that that route was not of my choosing.
I have a couple of loose ends, regarding my beneficial interest in my house, to tie up. This will put me in debt to the tune of around £60k, whereas my current signature does make it look as though I am, effectively 'debt-free'.
I agree with the point that Grey Pilgrim has made, and I will be altering my signature, once everything has been signed, to reflect my true situation.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

DFW Nerd # 166 PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTS0 -
I had my debt free date in my signature for a while but I too felt a bit wierd still coming on here and giving advice and felt I might be rubbing peoples noses in it IYSWIM. Now I include things that are relevent to me now in a MSE stylee. Like the Olympic challenge and sometimes the grocery challenge ( when I actually try to stick to it  ) I am still proud of my nerd number though and I want to keep that to remind myself how far I have come. I think that being a dent free wannabe can carry on even after becoming debt free. Official DFW Nerd Club Member #37 Debt free Feb 07 :cool:0

Interesting....
I don't put my debt figures up as it would both overwhelm me and (I feel) draw attention to the fact that I am paying a set amount each month but I am not a 'frugal' 'scrimping' person and feel ashamed a lot of the time...
But I like seeing other people that have become debt free and I wish I knew of more that had the same amount of debt as myself so I could keep the faith.Empty pockets never held anyone back, only empty heads and empty hearts can do that -Peale0 -
I thought thats why the dfw slogan was made
