i would just like to say all the food shopping tips in martin's book are fantastic- however what does one do if if you have you are on a gluten/dairy free diet - all the products in this category are dearer than normal food.

It depends on what you buy and how much you make. Ds1 and I are lactose intolerant. The biggest problem we have is with cow's milk protein. I buy lactofree milk (£1.36 a litre!) and pure sunflower marg (99p/500g) and plain soya yoghurt (£1.09/500g). We use small amounts of pecorino, manchego and roquefort - all sheep's milk cheeses. Also 70% chocolate is usually ok if you check the label.
What I don't do is buy any of the "special" foods which are very expensive. Value digestives and ginger nuts don't have milk in them - and I bake everything else. I make hm garlic bread using garlic oil or make garlic butter with the Pure. Pastry I make with lard and Pure. Mr Bad Examples choc yoghurt cake works well with soya yoghurt.
Also I have foung that the allergy advice on the back of packs is pretty good now - and quite a lot of things are ok - although lactose turns up in some funny things.

Try shopping in specialist health food shops rather than the supermarkets as these may be cheaper. If you live far enough away SUMA will deliver to you, and you pay the trade prices, though the minimum order is quite high. Worth having a look at their website.ilovefreegle.org - give it away don't throw it away0
