Depressing I know....does anyone else feel like this?...So I just plough on knowing that we will be better placed if we do lose our income,as we will be able to find jobs that pay less and still be OK. Pension plans are not going well either.
Gosh that's cheerful isn't it? Sorry:p
SMF2, I think you are being realistic and therefore you are actively planning to accommodate a possible risk. Your OP and being so far ahead on the mortgage payments must surely put you in a strong position to arrange reduced payments/payment holiday etc with the lender if the worst did happen. Of course speaking to them immediately is essential.
In addition, as you've paid in the OP regularly you can't be accused of deliberating reducing your assets in order to make benefit claims if unemployed; if you held the money as savings you may then have to deplete it until you hit the threshold (£16k?) before benefits will be available.
Therefore, I think you are actually in a better situation in the event that you lose your jobs than perhaps you could have been?
However, hope that things do hold together for you.0 -
I think in the current climate those sort of concerns are fairly valid. We've just been through a horrible time at work and one of our chaps in the yard has been made redundant. I've been there myself in the past on a fair few occasions too. It's an un-nerving time...and has now started to reach the point where most areas of employment are affected. I was concerned enough a couple of weeks back that I held off on sending the PPI reclaiming letter for the insurance on my loan - figured there was no point in sending it if I might end up relying on the insurance to pay the loan off!!
My view quite honestly is that all we can do for the most part is to sit tight....myself and Mr EH are both in a good position realistically speaking - we've also both made sure that we are fairly "relied on" for certain things in our respective workplaces and that's no bad thing. Making OP's is putting us into a better place overall and as others have said should the worst happen it also gives additional flexibility with our lender. I think you can feel comfortable that you are doing the very best thing in the circumstances for your family - and your caution over what might happen is entirely understandable.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Thanks for all your msgs. Eva I've never said what either me or Mr SMF2 do as I don't want anyone to identify us, given that I have put so much details about us on page 1.:cool: However, we are both in work that will probably struggle in a "very serious" down turn. On the plus side I work for a US company who pay me in sterling, thus the falling pound makes me 25% cheaper :j I'll have to convince my boss that I'm a real bargain.:D0

oops sorry!
I think making yourself invaluable at work will certain help, my dh sent an email to the uk boss of his part of the company with some suggestions about saving money for the technicians - very easy to implement but would save a fortune - boss was very impressed and is seriously looking into putting them in place. Dh suggested that these changes might reduce the threat of another post being made redundant!0 -
All true - I'll have to think about that:D0

Whilst I can completely understand you not wanting to be identified, the only details I read on the first page are that you're a family of four living in London with two children of secondary school age. That makes you one of several million surely?0 -

Not quite, because you can spot SMF2 as she has an energy meter in one hand and list of moneysaving tips tucked next to her PDA with MSE web site as the homepage...
I jest, but understand the concern. Me, well I'm sure it is easy to identify me as I haven't hidden myself much and do promote the site but what the hell, colleagues know I'm pushing to be MF and that it is more than 9yrs early if I can hit our most ambitious target. If I wanted to hide things now I'd have to delete the thread... so, if it disappears you'll know why;)
SMF2 keep plugging away, hope London's apparent exposure to a larger hit in the economy than elsewhere leaves the SMFs alone.0 -
LOL:rotfl::rotfl:
It's amazing how many people use this site. I was astonished when my twenty old niece told me that Martin Lewis was her hero...I was expecting Johnny Depp or something...:eek::eek::rotfl::rotfl:0
