Different companies run different schemes. Popular at the mo I think is where different grades have different value cars allocated to them.
Your grade might come with for example a Vauxhall Astra as the "base" car but you can choose a better one and pay the difference from your wages.
Don't forget the taxman takes a good whack too. And the better the car, the more he takes.0 -
Not if you are a bin man or a milk man! When your offered a job that comes with a company car do you get a choice of car you'd like ?
Sorry....normally they will provide you with a list of cars available on your pay grade, often you can upgrade or add extra toys and gadgets at your own expense. Some companies I have worked for offer a more selective list (last company it was BMW, Merc, Audi or VW), but the current company offers a very broad range of cars. Usually they offer models that catter for all needs, ie small faster cars for single folk and bigger family cars for those with kids.
There is also often the option to take a cash alternative each month, which might be worth considering. You could then use this to buy your own car on a 0% finance deal (offered by many different manufacturers - Vauxhall, Mazda, Citroen, SEAT, Etc...), then when you leave the company you take the car with you. Think carefully before making your choice, consider the tax implications of taking a company car and will your annual work mileage justify this choice.

I think its something you should have asked at the interview stage as where my son works the new employee got his old car ( just over 2 years old )and my son got his car 9 months early. Most companies pay a high penalty if they end the lease early so if they are not sure how long the new employee will stay this is one way out.0

My first job with a car had no choice. It was a small company and they had a car already so I got it. My second job was supposed to have a choice, but they gave me a car that they already had on a "temporary" basis. A year later they sent round a list, but I didn't want any of them so I took a cash allowance instead.
The cash allowance is worth considering. The tax on the car can be hundreds per month.0
