Advice on nice fit for trousers

Options
I am quite competent at making clothes and have done many in the past.

I am fed up with not getting nice fitting trousers so have decided to make some.

My methods of pattern amendments are self taught but if anyone has out there knows the correct method of measuring and altering the pattern so the trousers really fit nicely can you pass this on to me please.

Thank you

  • M&S short fit size 8 were great for me. but M&S do not stock them locally these days- I should actually complain! However the skirts they give size 8 not quite right as they have totally changed their sizing policy. Maybe I should send them an e-mail!

I'm self taught too, and have so far tried:

explanation from trained pattern cutter, which was unbelievably complicated.
    ditto book from library.

Vogue Sewing magazine (3-ish years ago) had an article explaining it, which I idiotically lent to a 'friend' and have not seen again. Vogue used to sell an 'adjust your pattern professionally' pattern, which might just be worth the money.

Sorry if this duplicates - edit isn't working for me today.

    This is what I mean:

I found it on the American patterns website. Worth a search on Ebay?

This is the best book I have found on alterating trousers, it's expensive but if you do a lot of sewing, I think it's worth its weight in gold. Also have you tried Burda patterns? I find their fit better than any other, so a good starting off point.

Really simply talks you through making a pattern base that FITS YOU. So everything you make adapted from the pattern fits perfectly. Must have saved me thousands of pounds on clothes that simply don't fit.

I've made skin tight chinese dresses, posh evening frocks( with the boobs and torso shaping that fits) and a whole wardrobe full of skirts and trousers that fit me exactly at the waist and hips (and are long enough in the leg). Basically means you can cut your fabric and whip it up on the overlocker/sewing machine and know that it will fit all of you own proportions.

Trousers and skirts take me about an hour to run up (even with fitting a zip) and a girl can never have too many "perfect fit black pants"

Know the challenge is to take my basic pattern and expand the front to allow for my growing bump - cos the pregnancy clothes I've seen in the shop are pretty yucky and not very well finished (oops - turned into my Mum there for a second)

    Good luck
