The Victoria Tunnel was the brainchild of one remarkable engineer, William E Gilhespie. It took 200 men two years and 10 months to finish construction of the two and a quarter mile tunnel running under Newcastle. It helped transport coal, and later, provided sanctuary for people during German bombing raids in the Second World War. Today, a section of the tunnel has been unearthed, and it’s possible to relive history with a guided tour carried out by the volunteers at the Ouseburn Trust. We’ve now got the chance for two to tour the tunnel in the next year. If you’d like to experience history first-hand, then just enter our competition.
