Daft question ~ saltwater rinse, dental.

I have had an abscess drained and was told to encourage the rest out, to do a saltwater bath with hot water as often as possible.
I didn't think to ask at the time, but how much salt to water do I do? And do I just do a quick rinse or leave it in my mouth for a few mins?
Told ya it was a daft question.

im having the same at the moment im usually recommended by my dentist to have it as salty as i can possibilty cope with it and as hot as i can cope with it withoutscolding my mouth or throwing up from the taste , i rinse it round once making sure its goes near where my abcess has been and spit then do it few more times as i tend to fill half a cup for of hot water and pour in alot of salt, salt water also cleans the area and helps any open wounds close and heal quicker
hope your abcess goes for good too,0 -
Yeah you too
Been in agony with it
I am not sure I could cope with a lot of salt though, was hoping it would be like half a teaspoon or somethingWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -

Hello iwanttosave
I'm sure that Toothsmith or Teerah will be along shortly to give their opinion.;) In the meantime, I would try a teaspoon of salt in a tumbler of warm water. Personally, I wouldn't use hot water because hot water can make pain worse.;)
Swill the salt solution around your mouth (particularly over the abscess site) then spit it out.
You shouldn't swallow the salt solution...................so you should be able to 'cope' with the salt alright.;)
I hope you're soon feeling much better.
Regards

Pretty much spot on there from the Nilester!!!
Good vigerous swilling around the site is all that I would add, and as many mouthfuls as it takes to finish the glass.
Glad it's finally getting sorted Wanty!!How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Yeah, I had a temp dressing put back on after the first draining and antibiotics given but was still in a lot of pain and couldn't close my mouth, went back today and the abscess had either filled back up or it was another one near it, anyway she has left the dressing off until Friday and drained it the best she could.
I tell you something, it feels so much better, not even needed any painkillers today or anything :j I can even close my mouth now
Will go swill in a moment, although I do find just the taste makes me retch so will try a bit ofsalt and build it up.

I know someone who was told 'Salt water' by the dentist.
On his next visit, the dentist asked how his mouth was... he said 'Fine, but I feel really sick after the salt water'
Doofus was drinking it... :lipsrsealMy TV is broken!
