Salary Expectations

Hi All,

I am currently in the process of apply for a new job. The application asks me to list my salary expectations and I am not really sure how to answer this. I am hoping to move back to an environmental job after working in a different field for a number of years. My degrees are environmental science based but I don't have the practical experience required by a lot of roles. This means I am probably going to have to take a large pay cut (which I don't mind). However, I do have a lot of transferable skills to bring to a role, so I don't want to sell myself short, but I am aware that I am looking at more entry level type positions to get a foot in the door.

Should I put a figure in my cover letter, based on what entry level positions in the sector offer or is there any advice anyone can give me on how to handle this part of the application - I don't want to price myself out of the position.

Thank you in advance.

Entry level is around £17,000. I'm currently on around £25,000, but in a different sector.

So you could go down to perhaps 18/19k, given you have transferable skills

Thank you. I know I'll have to take a pay cut, so it's not dreadful. I'm pretty unhappy where I am at the moment and there's no chance of advancement here, so I'd rather try to get into something I'm more qualified for even if I have to tighten my belt for a while.

If they're looking for a graduate then I'd say around £22k as a minimum.

Why not contact them and ask what sort of salary range they are looking to hire at?

Phone them up, say you don't want to waste their time, are interested in the job, and just wanted to know what the range of salaries they were looking at. Don't try to justify things either way, just find out.
