Climbing Slemish! Oh how you've brought back memories for me!
My school had an organised outng to Slemish every year on 17th March. We had to bring our school hymn books and sing a joyous rendition of St Patrick's Breastplate from the top!
I think we were a,olowd to ditch the school uniform for the day.
There was a great atmosphere and much fun and sweets to be had on the bus on the way home.!

  • Like everything in this country, "culture" is just an excuse for alcohol and an opportunity to stick the fingers up at “the other side”. Certainly the case in large parts of Belfast.

In fairness to those that have genuine cultural interests the parades are early and generally trouble free but the drunkenness and pretty intimidating atmosphere that follows is best avoided IMHO.

Wouldn’t go near the Holylands/lower Ormeau at any stage.

I would say the exact same of another public holiday in July so I am genuinely unbiased.

Maybe we could follow Munich and just call it a beer fest.

I'm not sure what is wrong with celebrating our national saint, and your nephew is I assume just wanting to join the big Irish party when he's here. I would say he should just stick to central Belfast for the parade and then afterwards any pub that is marking the date would do for a celebratory pint or two. It's a good money spinner for the pubs so there won't be any problem him finding a good watering hole.

Since st Patrick's day is a Friday this year, it gives us a long weekend. The next two years will be the same, with the holiday on a Monday. Even more drinking than usual. I feel hungover even thinking about it. Unless of course everyone is off satan's buttermilk for lent.

Well he's here and it appears he's a lightweight when it comes to drinking :)

He's going to go to Derry to celebrate

It's a work day for me as usual

    Hope he enjoys it

The parade is good in Derry normally, and the pubs are fun!
