Previous Tenants Debts

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong thread!
OK, we moved into a new place just over a month ago. Since then we have had about 4 letters a day for the previous tenants. For the first week or so i just returned them to sender. Then i noticed alot of them coming through looked the same, so i started writing down the return addresses. Some of these have now come up 4 or 5 times for the 2 different people who lived here. After a milisecond of googling the return addresses i can see that they are all from different debt collection places. Some of these letters are 'red notices' and you can easily make out the amounts (in the tens of thousands) owed.
Ive tried calling one of the agencies and told them that the person no longer lived here but was advised that as they didnt have a forwarding address for them the debt was still open so we would probably keep receiving mail.
I've got my boss to type up and arsey letter for the worst offenders which i shall be sending before the week is up, but im not sure even this will help.
I'm not too worried about debt collectors turning up at the door while im in but am worried about them sitting outside waiting for me to get back from work. Then i suppose it would be a contest over who could last longest as i certainly wont be opening the front door.

Now, i have read through a few other posts similar to this but am wondering if there is anyway to get them to sod off? Like i said the letters are coming from serveral agencies plus banks so they are more than one company looking for these people. Also, i have given some of the letters to the landlords to pass on but it doesnt seem to be helping

surely the land lord has a forwarding address for them, if only to be able to send the deposit to them?
If not, I am unsure what to suggest. I know you can put a note of disassociation on your credit file, but not sure if this would help in this case. Perhaps it would be worth asking the CAB. Did you rent the place via an agency? Because they might be able to offer advice on what to do.

The only other thing I can suggest is to send them copies of your tenancy agreement, showing the date you moved in, so you can prove you are not the people the company is looking for?

I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • chev's post is very good.
Also it would be worth just writing no longer at this address on the envelope and pputting them back in the post box. If anyone turns up at your door show them your tenancy agreement and ID.

  • Sorry, i meant to put i have given letters to the estate agents not the landlord! The Estate agents are powerless i suppose they cant make the ex tenants give the debt collection a forwarding address.
I have put 'not at this address' on the letters but they arent listening :-(
I will show them the tenancy agreement if they turn up while i am at home but if they are waiting for me when i get back from work im pretty sure they wont let me go in and get it!
  • When I moved here I kept getting letters about prev tennants and no amount of telling them it wasnt me made a difference so I asked my solicitor to send a letter & that did the trick; worth every penny of the £10!!
