I habe been paid a tax rebate rather than wages

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help. I left one job on 2nd January and started a new one on 3rd January. I was entitled to pay for 2 days plus 1.5 days annual leave accrued. An amount of £183.60 was paid into my account on 31st January, I thought it was a little lower than I had anticipated but near enough. I was speaking to HRMC because they took an addition £183.60 in tax out of my February wages from my new employer. They told me that the old employer had categorised the £183.60 as a tax rebate and my wages were marked at £0.00 (the old employer that is). So I just out my last pay slip from the old employer and sure enough it said wages £0.00 tax paid £183.60-

So basically I have not received wages from the old employer for the 3.5 days I was entitled to. The irony that the old employer is an ombudsman has not by passed me.

So I just wanted to check that I am still owed wages for the 3.5 days from the old employer?

I have emailed the Chair, the CEO, head of finance, payroll accountant and head of HR detailing everything to them, attached a copy of the payslip and asking for a revised payslip and the wages that I am owed to be paid asap by BACS transfer.

I just wanted to check really that I am on the right track, I am owed this money? If they don't get back to my emails where do I go from there?

thanks for your time guys.

Contact wages /payroll to ask when you would be receiving your wages , no need to involve any others, that sounds like a refund from over payment of tax no actual wage yet.,
  • Yep that's what it looks like from the wage slip, not sure how it happened, also no tax, NI or pension contribution paid for lose days either.

The HRMC have claimed back the £183.60 though in February's pay, so I feel its more of payroll error than a genuine tax rebate, as I am currently appealing a tax demand for £777.20, HRMC confirmed to me yesterday that the deduction was nothing to do with the tax demand and was because of an inputting error on the part of my old employer.

HR have acknowledged my correspondence, am now waiting for payroll to contact me.

    Thanks for replying.
  • I have contacted the payroll department who said that they paid me for the January days in December paypacket - firstly I specifically asked Payroll to do this but was told it was not possible and I had to wait until January for the 3.5 days pay, so when an amount when into my account on 31st December I assume this is what it was for. My December payslip does not mention anywhere advanced payment for January days owed so the way it looks is that I have been paid for more days than exist in the Month. I also queried why they would input anything in the HMRC system for me for January when they paid all they owed to me (or so they say) in December. They said that it did throw up a rebate of £183.60 which they paid, but I am currently appealing a tax demand for £777 so why pay me a tax rebate when HRMC are saying I owe them £777?

I don't really understand it to be honest and I have asked for further clarification.
