Reclaiming "Insurance Protection" - Halifax

I read MSE's advice on PPI recently, which advised that if you saw certain words on your loan/mortgage statement then t0 consider putting a claim in for mis-selling. Having not even considered that I'd been sold such a product and that the mortgage was paid off some 8 years ago, I had previously dismissed any action but of course continued to get the good old PPI calls. Having dug out and looked at the Halifax statements from 1982 through to 2009, I noticed the words "Protection Insurance" against the account every month. Now I don't know if this is PPI or not, but I though I'd give it a try and submitted a claim direct with the Halifax last week - it will take them 8 weeks to investigate and make a decision by the end of April. It was easy to do and free to submit the request. I'm not expecting anything to be honest, but in this age of PPI mis-seliing, I thought it worth a try just to see what they say. I reckon we have paid out around £4500 over the years on these "protection Insurance" products which at the time was seen a requirement of taking the mortgage, but now I look back and think what was it for !! Lets see what happens.

Halifax are a soft touch on PPI. You may get lucky with your try-it-on complaint if it is MPPI.
However, mortgage protection is a generic term that is used for life assurance as well income protection or MPPI. Also MPPi didnt exist in 1982.I reckon we have paid out around £4500 over the years on these "protection Insurance" products which at the time was seen a requirement of taking the mortgage,
up until the mid to late 90s, it was a requirement with many lenders to have life assurance. Nothing wrong with that and it is still allowed today if the lender decides (they tend to only do it on commercial borrowing nowadays).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
