Marriage Allowance

I was on maternity leave most of this tax year so am below the tax threshold but I will be a tax payer again next year. Do I understand correctly that I need to apply for the marriage allowance now so it can be backdated to 6 April 2016 and then immediately cancel so it runs only until 5 April 2017? HMRC website says "If you stop transferring the allowance to your partner, it will run until the end of the tax year (5 April)."
