Lunch Breaks

Can I sign a disclaimer stating that I will not hold my employer responsible should anything untoward happen to me due to choosing to not have a lunch break? Everyone has worked 9-4 for years, working through lunch. My boss wants us now to take an hour's lunch as she's now worried that someone could have an accident on the way home and hold the company responsible. It's not a very busy office and quite laid back so not stressful.

  • Yes you must sign a disclaimer. because sometime employer will charge on the owner about not giving enough time to take lunch or etc.

Isn't there a legal requirement to have a break after x hours working? If so, a disclaimer will have no value.

The requirement is for the appropriate break to be available.

Since these breaks are hard won, why would you look to give it away?

Why do you not want a lunch break? I doubt it's for your employers' convenience, and the lack of it may be detrimental to your afternoon's work (I know my work wouldn't be as good if I had no lunch!).

Please forgive my ignorance. I was a teacher for 15 years. What's a lunch break?

From what my mom says, its a time when you get to work and eat food at the same time.

Maybe I was fortunate but when we got a new office manager she realised that a lot of people weren't taking the breaks to which they were entitled. She actually insisted that everybody did take the breaks as it was her belief that performance was actually improved by getting away from the job for a while. There was certainly no negative effect on performance, but despite that some people still moaned about having to take them. I can only assume their mentality was that being at their desk all the time would impress management.
To our office manager they were just stupid!

I suspect the OP wants to work through lunch and then go home early.

    This isn't permitted...
the break is taken in one go somewhere in the middle of the day (not at the beginning or end)
