Tutoring via agency - tax position?

Options
I have started working through a tutoring agency to give Maths lessons to a student at the student's home two hours a week. This is the only client I have at the moment; I only really intend on taking up one student at a time as I am currently doing a phD and that's all I have time for.

The tutoring agency encourages everyone to register as self-employed. However, just considering my situation, I am not sure as I would be counted as 'self-employed' per se. I only work for one client and, after reading HMRC's guidance on supervision, direction and control for agency workers, the client and the agency do have the right to direct me where and what I teach (according to a curriculum).

So, long story short, do I still need to register as self-employed in this case?

How much taxable income do you anticipate having this tax year, and from what sources? If you are anywhere near needing to pay tax on this income, or will be near to paying tax on this income next tax year, then yes, registering would be wise.
