Less skills required but higher pay

Hi all

Would you apply for a position that is below your skill level but has a higher salary (i.e. £5,000 more than your current annual pay)? I have been with my current company, in a finance role for 4 years and I would like a complete change of working environment and also most importantly, more money! However, I am concerned about the implications as it will not look good on my CV if I do decide to change jobs again in the future. What would you do? Any advice would be appreciated.

What would the potential for advancement/training be in the new company?

Yep, in a heartbeat. Whilst it isn't all about the cash, you're clearly a bit fed up where you are, and changing things up allows other possibilities. Maybe you'd join the new company, they'd recognise your skills and promote you quickly to both higher pay and status. Or maybe you'd enjoy an easier life for a while. Fact is you wouldn't be asking if you were satisfied where you are, so mix things up and let me opportunities find you.

"Fortune favours the brave" is actually a truth - at least making it possible for a happy coincidence to happen means a happy coincidence may happen. I had a voicemail from a wrong number, let them know, but took a chance to ask if their company was in my sector. By sheer dumb luck, I was on a rare London visit that day, the guy was 3 minutes away, had a 20 minute window for a face to face chat, and is looking into investing heavily into my sector. Now, nothing may come of it of course, but certainly nothing could come of it if I hadn't asked and taken a chance. And if it goes well, I potentially have really interesting work stretching out for years, well paid. Take a chance, or don't, but if you don't, the next 4 years may look somewhat similar to the past 4. If you want an extra motivation, in your life, you get about 4000 weeks. Digest that number, see if it changes how you feel about the future and taking a chance now and again ;-)

    Thanks for responding.

That's a good question, Masomnia. I've had a look on the company's website and around the internet and apparently, they have an internal programme to help staff grow and develop however, the details are very vague. I also came across reviews written by current and former employees who reported that the company is expanding at the moment so there are opportunities but there was no information about the finance department. I suppose I won't really know the answer until I ask them at the interview (if I'm shortlisted).

Yes, you are right, paddyrg, I am a bit unhappy at present. I know I should grab any opportunities with both hands but I always like to consider the pros and cons before jumping in.
