Yes, I think the post was just emphasising that other people do what the OP is considering, indeed, I've done on call that frequently myself in the past.0 -
Personally I'd use the time to do stuff like housework, reading, learning a new skill so essentially you are being paid to do those things - with a bonus if you are called in. Its all about perspective really.0

I agree. I think if you take on this type of commitment you have to accept that a degree of restriction come with it and that it what the payment is intended to compensate.
Before the advent of mobile phones you would have had to stay at home if you had taken something like this on, now at least you can go out providing you can get to the office within half an hour. You can't have the penny and the bun!0 -

I can remember when being issued with a pager greatly increased my freedom to move away from the phone when on call!0 -

I see what you mean but as the OP is only covering the weekend it amounts to the sameLost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I use to work on call, we had two weeks on and two of as this gave us a decent break from it, we also had a weekend on call allowance and a weekday allowance, basically it's free money for being available in the event of being needed, when we did get a call we where given a minimum of 3 hours pay no matter how long we where in attendance for (weekends was 1x1/2, public holidays x2) we also got a mileage rate for the miles covered getting to the job and back.
This altogether had the effect of boosting my pay by about 4k a year for around 10-20 callouts during the year.
Going into the interview i would be asking them a question or two around it with regard to how often callouts occur on average, is there likely to be more than 1 in any one night, do they pay the time in on a call as wages or as TOIL and is there a transport rate paid when going in on a call.Norn Iron Club member No 3530
