There are several banks that do "basic" accounts thats what you need to ask for. If you still have the outstanding debts choose a bank that you are not owing money too though.

You are best applying in person for these accounts too rather than the internet.
  • We always recommended clients to go to either the Halifax or Alliance & Leicester.

Both offer basic accounts and you will be provided with an Electron card that can be used more or less anywhere. Direct debits can be set up . These accounts are fine and readily available.

You will need to apply in the branch and you should take some id and proof of utility bills etc.

    Hi

I can recomend Co-op cash minder account, I applied over the phone and they were really quick in processing it. You get an electron card and you have a fantastic online service where you can do transfers, Lloyds don't allow you to do much on their online service for a basic account.
  • I have an Alliance & Leicester account. It is very good. Have a visa debit card, cheque book but no overdraft (which doesnt bother me any more). I must say it is a welcome relief after being with Natwest for 10 years!!

I've got a Natwest Step Account which is basic (my credit history is shot!), you can't get overdrafts or credit on it.

Another good one if you're really having probs is Nationwide which offer a basic account that doesn't require a credit check but you can only open this account if you go into a branch and specify the account with no credit check. Make sure you do this otherwise they will automatically go for the one up.

I managed to get a basic Halifax Easy cash Account with Electron Card... and can run Direct Debits from it.

I applied online.......they wrote asking for 2 forms of ID......bills or benefit statements.....i posted them......they photocopied them and returned them.

Success! I didn't even speak to anyone on the phone or face to face!
