Help to buy mortgage with bad credit

Me and my husband are hoping to buy a help to buy property next year. He currently has a poor credit history with a default due to be removed in two months. I already have a property which we are selling in the next few months as we live in a rented accommodation.
My question is will his credit file improve enough to get a mortgage? he earns a very good salary and has no other credit problems except a loan for £6500 which paid for our wedding and a credit card with a £1000 on it. He has not had any payment issues in over 4yrs.
Also am I doing the right thing in selling my property first?
Thanks
G
