I am also having this problem. The issue for me, I think, is long term unemployment though. If you're not receiving any offers and you have current work experience, it makes me worried. People tell me to volunteer, but honestly I need a job as soon as because I need money. I live near to a seaside resort, so I may just start going into those places or ringing around enquiring about vacancies. I guess the only option is to do that or offer to work a day for free to prove my ability then see if they like me.

The only issue with that is getting taken advantage of, them saying yes then not paying me. At the end of the day, there is no legal paperwork on either side to say I am employed by their company if they do take advantage. I would only work 1 or 2 days for free, but it would have to end in a paid job otherwise it's not worth it to be volunteering my time to a company for free. Have you thought about doing this Fireflyaway?

You should also consider registering with agencies. Direct recruitment causes a vast flood of applications that have to be reviewed, so lots of companies recruit via agencies who advertise and identify candidates for them. Many jobs are not openly advertised in London anymore, you wouldn't know about them unless you register with the right agency!

They can also give you feedback on your CV and possibly advise on the kind of roles you are seeking.

    Best of luck

Thanks all. I got 2 rejections today. At least they replied! I feel a bit of a failure really as I don't have a career / profession as such. I'm just looking at jobs that match my skills as far as possible.
I wish I could say to people I am a nurse/ teacher / accountant / builder or whatever. Even thought of retraining but don't know what I'd retrain as! The thought of working random jobs for the next 30 years is just depressing!
