Can I quit a job after one day?

Hi all, I went to an interview for a weekend waitress/hostess role at a 24 hour casino (a top prestigious one). I was offered the job and was initially really excited as I wanted the role to start paying the debts on credit card I posted in previous thread and also just to get some extra cash to save.
I have a full time 9-6 Monday to Friday job. I attended a day training and am in tomorrow and Sunday for further training then my shifts start next weekend. The weekend after that I'm due to come in at 5am (it's 50 mins train from me and I would have to get a cab to the nearest tube station as trains don't run at that time). The shifts are 7 hours. I'm now getting cold feet about night shift work considering I have a full time job. I'm going to be exhausted.
They're potentially asking me to come straight from work on Friday to do a night shift then come back Saturday night to do a night shift with Sunday off.
I'm really getting anxious - I've signed the contract and to get into this particular company is quite highly sought after (only 5 of us made it out of 30) so I feel terrible even considering leaving before I've started. What do I do? My parents want me to quit, my friends say to give it a go for at least a month

I used to work those hours, full time work then seven till one on a Friday and four to midnight on a Saturday. The money was so useful. I would give it a try, if you are finding it too much you can always give it up after giving the required notice.0

I agree with your friends.
Give it a go.
If it proves too much then stop.
Years ago I worked full time and three nights in a club until 3.00am.
I lived on the wages and tips from the part time job and saved every penny from my full time job.
It gave me the deposit for my first house.0 -
Okay, I'm just worried for the night shifts. They were transparent and mentioned it's basically 24 hours so shifts can be all times but to be honest, in my mind, where they know I work full time I thought they would give me day shifts.
Il be travelling home from central London to Hertfordshire and this will involve the 24 hour tube then a cab I presume. Just don't know if the money will be worth it. I'm having major anxiety- I know I need to give it ago but the thought of going in tomorrow (after a massively hectic week at work) is filling me with dread. I can't believe it as I wanted this!0 -
Yes that's a good point. Wow you did well to work so much! I want to have this strength - my plan is to use £500 on my wages to pay back credit cards then use this money I'm getting to pay for flights as my sister is moving to NY and I want to visit her regularly0

I would go ahead with the mindset that you are only going to stay one or two months. Even that short time if you put all the money gained towards your debt it will help. Will you get tips? it could work out to very lucrative you would be mad not to a least give it a go (at this stage you don't know how much you will earn if the tips are unknown).
You could always take a days holiday from your full time job if you find you need to.
Good luck let us know how you get on0 -
Another one for give it a go. I currently have three jobs; one full time and two part time.
Full time is Monday- Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm
PT 1: Monday, Tuesday, Weds, 3:45am - 7:45am
PT 2: Monday 6pm - 11pm, Weds 6pm - 10:30pm, Sat 6pm - 11pm/1am
Monday and Wednesday are killers, but you get used to it. I always have every Sunday off without fail so I can spend time with my OH.
I also go to the gym a couple of times a week and the cinema, so my social life hasn't gone completely down the toilet.0 -
Hi yes there are tips which are supposedly good for full timers but no idea what they are for part time workers.
I'm feeling quite upset as they want me to come in on Saturday which is the last day before my sister leaves the UK. They didn't tell us about this before until a training session in the week when they said we have to come in "this" week not the "coming week" as they'd said on the phone. Anyway I can't be unprofessional and say oh I can't come in.0 -
Wow!!!! And there's me moaning. That's incredible- don't know how you do it. May I ask what the jobs involve (no worries if not)- I'm just intrigued! Are they close to your home too?0

I used to earn more in tips than wages!
Forget all that and just think of the freedom that this extra income will give you.
I do not know where you live but I read that an airline will be offering cheap flights to the USA from Edingburgh for £69 each way and Gatwick £130 each way and to an airport quite near to New York.0 -
